Norvos is one of the Nine Free Cities of Essos, a city-state located on the river Noyne, north of the Rhoyne. It is a place of stark contrasts, known for its severe religious traditions and its formidable military power, which once broke the Volantene fleet on Dagger Lake. The city's culture is deeply influenced by the worship of a bearded god, whose priests hold significant sway over daily life and governance.

Geography and History

Norvos lies on the eastern bank of the Noyne, a tributary of the Rhoyne. Its history is marked by its successful defense against the expansionist ambitions of Volantis during the Century of Blood. The Norvoshi fleet, alongside that of Qohor, defeated the Volantene fire galleys on Dagger Lake, a victory that helped curb the power of the tigers in Volantis and established Norvos as a significant power in the region.

Role in the Story

Norvos is primarily significant as the homeland of Mellario, the wife of Prince Doran Martell of Dorne. Their marriage, a love match, was a rare instance of Doran following his heart rather than his head, and it has been a source of both personal and political strain. Mellario's Norvoshi heritage and her eventual return to Norvos after a falling out with her husband over the upbringing of their children, particularly the sending of their son Quentyn to foster at Yronwood, is a key element of the Martell family history. Quentyn Martell himself, who journeys to Slaver's Bay to seek Daenerys Targaryen's hand, often thinks of his mother and the distant city of his birth, a place he has never visited but which represents a lost connection to his maternal lineage. The city's strict customs and its distance from the political intrigues of Westeros make it a symbol of a different, more austere world, one that contrasts sharply with the sun-drenched, passionate culture of Dorne.
